Betta Tank Mates: What Actually Works (and What Gets Attacked)
Safe betta tank mates for 10+ gallon tanks — snails, shrimp, corydoras, and more — plus fish that almost always fail and how to introduce companions.
Most betta tank mate advice fails because it treats every Betta splendens like a calm community centerpiece. Males are territorial. Long fins look like rivals. Fast surface fish steal food. The safe list is short, conditional, and tank-size dependent.
Default recommendation: Keep a male betta alone in a heated, filtered 5–10 gallon. Add tank mates only if the tank is larger, heavily planted, and you are willing to rehome fish when personality fails.

Quick answer
| Mate | Risk | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Nerite / mystery snails | Low | Best “companions” for most bettas |
| Cherry shrimp | Medium | Adults in planted tanks; babies get eaten |
| Amano shrimp | Medium–low | Larger, better survival than cherries for some tanks |
| Corydoras | Medium–low | Needs 20+ gallons and a group of 6+ |
| Otocinclus | Medium | Needs mature tank + group; delicate |
| Female bettas (sorority) | High | Advanced only; not a beginner project |
| Other male bettas | Extreme | Separate tanks only |
| Guppies, fancy fins, neons | High | Often nipped or stressed |
| Angelfish, barbs, tetras with long fins | High | Wrong match |
Rules before you add anyone
- Tank size: Community attempts need 10 gallons minimum, preferably 20 long so the betta can claim a zone and others can leave.
- Layout: Dense plants, floating cover, visual breaks. Open bare tanks raise aggression.
- Flow: Bettas hate strong current. Baffle the filter.
- Feed intentionally: Target-feed the betta so fast midwater fish do not outcompete him.
- Watch for a week: Flaring at glass is normal. Continuous chasing, torn fins, or hiding that never ends means separate them.
- Quarantine new livestock: Quarantine tank setup and procedures.
Best betta tank mates (conditional)
Snails (safest)
Nerites and mystery snails ignore the betta and clean film algae / leftover soft food. Some bettas still nip antennae — rare but possible. Avoid assassin snails if you keep a snail colony you care about.
Shrimp
- Cherry shrimp: Work in heavily planted 10–20+ gallons with lots of moss. Expect some fry predation. Start with a large colony so losses are not total.
- Amano shrimp: Bigger, better for algae; less “colony breeding” drama.
- Avoid: Expensive caridina colonies with an untested aggressive male.
Copper meds and many conditioners kill shrimp — check labels.
Corydoras catfish
Bottom-dwellers that mostly stay out of the betta’s lane. Requirements:
- 20 gallons+ for a proper group
- Sand substrate
- School of 6+
- Sinking food (they are not free garbage disposals)
Profile: Corydoras.
Otocinclus
Good glass grazers in mature tanks with soft biofilm. Fragile in new setups. Keep groups and offer blanched veg / wafers so they do not starve when algae runs out.
Small, calm midwater fish (highest variance)
Some keepers succeed with:
- Ember tetras or chili rasboras in 20+ gallon planted tanks
- Female endlers in heavy cover (still a fin-nipping risk)
Success is individual. Introduce midwater fish first when possible, then the betta, or rearrange hardscape so territories reset. Have a backup plan.
What usually fails
Other male bettas
They will fight. No “maybe” for shared tanks.
Guppies, mollies, fancy platies
Flowing tails look like rivals. Guppies are listed as incompatible on our betta profile for a reason. See betta vs guppy.
Neon tetras and many small tetras
Often fin-nipped or stressed; also prefer different energy levels. Neons want a proper school in stable water — better as their own community, not as betta décor.
Tiger barbs, serpae tetras, many danios
Nippy or hyper. Danios may harass a long-finned betta in small tanks.
Angelfish and large cichlids
Wrong size class and temperament.
“Just one more” overstocking
Community math fails fast in 10 gallons. Use the stocking guide and tools.
Female bettas and sororities
Female-only groups (“sororities”) need large footprint tanks, heavy planting, odd numbers, and experience reading aggression. They are not a beginner tank-mate solution for a male. If you want multiple bettas, separate tanks are cleaner.
How to introduce tank mates
- Confirm betta is healthy and eating in a stable, cycled tank.
- Add hardscape/plants that break sight lines.
- Add snails/shrimp first if those are the plan.
- For fish, add companions, feed well, lights dim for a day.
- Observe at feeding and after lights-on — peak aggression windows.
- Remove anyone with torn fins or constant pursuit within 24–48 hours. Do not “hope it settles” for a week of damage.
Sample stocking plans
10 gallon planted — low risk
- 1 male betta
- 1–2 nerite snails
- Optional: adult cherry shrimp colony if heavily planted
20 gallon long — moderate risk community
- 1 male betta (calm individual)
- 6–8 corydoras
- Snails
- Optional: small group of embers only if the betta ignores them
Do not build
- Betta + guppies + neons + pleco in 10 gallons
- Two males “to keep each other company”
Frequently asked questions
Can bettas live with goldfish?
No. Different temperatures, bioload, and temperament needs. Goldfish need large cool systems — goldfish tank size.
Will a betta eat shrimp?
Often yes for babies; adults survive better with cover. Plan for losses.
Do female bettas need tank mates?
No. Females can live alone happily. Groups are optional and advanced.
My betta is “fine” with guppies — should I keep them?
If zero fin damage after weeks, you got a calm outlier. Still do not recommend it as a general rule, and never force the combo in a nano.
What temperature for a community with a betta?
Roughly 76–80°F is a practical shared target for bettas and most tropical companions listed here.
