About Weather Loach

The Weather Loach, also known as the Pond Loach or Dojo Loach, is a fascinating and hardy fish native to East Asia. Named for their reputed ability to sense changes in barometric pressure and become more active before storms, these elongated, eel-like fish are popular among aquarists for their unique appearance and interesting behaviors. They have a cylindrical, elongated body with small fins and can vary in color from yellow-brown to olive with mottled patterns. Weather Loaches are extremely adaptable, tolerating a wide range of temperatures from cool to tropical conditions, making them suitable for both coldwater and heated aquariums. They are known for burrowing in the substrate and can even survive brief periods out of water by absorbing oxygen through their skin. Their hardy nature, long lifespan, and entertaining antics have made them beloved pets for decades.

Care Guide

Care Requirements

Tank Setup

Weather Loaches need a spacious tank with soft, sandy substrate for their burrowing behavior. A 40-gallon tank or larger is recommended due to their adult size. Provide hiding spots with caves, driftwood, or PVC pipes. They appreciate plants but may uproot delicate specimens. Ensure the tank has a tight-fitting lid as they are excellent escape artists and can climb out.

Water Quality

  • Temperature: 50-77°F (10-25°C) - extremely wide range
  • pH: 6.0-8.0
  • Water Hardness: Soft to hard, 2-25 dGH
  • Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
  • Nitrate: <30 ppm

Feeding

These omnivores are not picky eaters and accept sinking pellets, frozen foods, and vegetable matter. They scavenge the substrate for food and help clean up leftovers. Supplement their diet with bloodworms, brine shrimp, and blanched vegetables. Feed once daily with portions appropriate for their larger size.

Behavior & Compatibility

Weather Loaches are peaceful, sociable fish that can be kept singly or in small groups. They are active burrowers and will spend much of their time sifting through the substrate. They are suitable for community tanks with other peaceful fish that can tolerate their cooler temperature preferences. They make excellent companions for goldfish in unheated tanks.

Tips for Success

  • Use fine gravel or sand substrate to allow their natural burrowing behavior
  • Absolutely essential: secure lid with no gaps; they are notorious escape artists
  • They can tolerate cooler temperatures and make excellent coldwater aquarium inhabitants
  • Provide hiding spots as they are naturally secretive and nocturnal
  • Handle with care if necessary as they have sharp spines under their eyes
  • Their barometric sensitivity may cause increased activity before weather changes
