About Peppered Corydoras

The Peppered Corydoras, also known as the Mottled Corydoras, is one of the most popular and hardy corydoras species in the aquarium hobby. Native to South American waterways, these charming bottom-dwellers feature a mottled pattern of dark patches on a lighter background, resembling pepper sprinkled on their body - hence their common name. They are one of the most temperature-tolerant corydoras, able to thrive in cooler waters that many tropical species cannot tolerate. This makes them excellent candidates for unheated aquariums in appropriate climates. Peppered Corydoras are active, social fish that constantly scavenge the substrate for food while occasionally darting to the surface for a breath of air. Their peaceful nature, hardiness, and entertaining behaviors have made them a staple in community aquariums for generations.

Care Guide

Care Requirements

Tank Setup

Peppered Corydoras need a tank with smooth substrate such as sand or rounded gravel to protect their sensitive barbels. A 20-gallon tank accommodates a group of 6 comfortably. Provide areas with plants, driftwood, or decorations, but ensure there is open space for foraging. They appreciate some shaded areas created by floating plants or tall vegetation.

Water Quality

  • Temperature: 64-77°F (18-25°C) - notably cooler than most tropical fish
  • pH: 6.0-7.5
  • Water Hardness: Soft to moderate, 2-12 dGH
  • Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
  • Nitrate: <20 ppm

Feeding

These omnivorous scavengers readily accept sinking pellets, algae wafers, and frozen foods. They are efficient cleaners that will consume leftover food, but should not be relied upon as the sole cleaning crew. Supplement their diet with sinking foods and occasional treats of bloodworms or vegetable matter. Feed in the evening when they are most active.

Behavior & Compatibility

Peppered Corydoras are peaceful, social fish that must be kept in groups of 6 or more. They are active during daylight hours and provide constant movement in the lower regions of the tank. They are compatible with virtually any peaceful community fish of appropriate size and make excellent companions for small tetras, rasboras, and livebearers.

Tips for Success

  • Keep in groups of 6+ for natural schooling and improved confidence
  • Their cooler temperature range makes them suitable for room-temperature tanks
  • Use soft substrate to prevent damage to their barbels
  • They are sensitive to poor water quality; maintain pristine conditions
  • They may breed readily in well-maintained aquariums
  • Provide driftwood and plants to create a natural environment
