Blue Gourami

The Blue Gourami, also known as the Three Spot Gourami, is one of the larger and more robust gourami species available in the aquarium hobby. They feature a beautiful powder-blue coloration with two dark spots (the eye counts as the third spot). Native to Southeast Asia, these labyrinth fish can grow to 6 inches and are more active and somewhat more aggressive than smaller gourami species. They make excellent centerpieces for medium-sized community tanks but should not be kept with very small or long-finned fish.

Blue Gouramis need space and some plant cover.

• 30+ gallons minimum
• Moderate planting
• Open swimming space
• Surface access for breathing
• Caves or hiding spots

Water Quality

• Temperature: 72-82°F (22-28°C)
• pH: 6.0-8.0 (very adaptable)
• Water Hardness: Soft to hard (3-25 dGH)
• Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm
• Nitrate: <20 ppm

Feeding

Omnivores with hearty appetites:

• Quality flakes or pellets
• Frozen foods
• Vegetables
• Live foods occasionally

Behavior & Compatibility

Semi-aggressive and territorial:

• Territorial: Defend space, especially males
• Active: Swim throughout tank
• Labyrinth fish: Breathe from surface
• Size: Can intimidate smaller fish

Good Tank Mates:

• Medium tetras (Serpae, Congo)
• Barbs (Cherry, Tiger - not nippy)
• Corydoras
• Medium-sized peaceful fish

Avoid:

• Small fish under 2 inches
• Long-finned fish (Bettas, Angelfish)
• Other gourami species
• Very shy fish

Color Variations

• Blue: Natural blue coloration
• Gold: Golden/orange variant
• Opaline: Marbled pattern

Sexing

• Males: Pointed dorsal fin, more colorful
• Females: Rounded dorsal fin, fuller body

Breeding

Bubble nest builders:

• Fry care: Male guards nest
