What new tank syndrome actually is

Fish (and food) produce ammonia. In a cycled tank, bacteria convert:

Ammonia → nitrite → nitrate

In a new tank those bacteria are missing or scarce. Ammonia and nitrite climb. Both are toxic at low levels. Fish burn their gills, cannot carry oxygen well, and crash.

This is why “the tank looked fine when I bought the fish” fails: clear water can still be toxic.

How long does the danger period last?
